For those into meditation or gentle practices like Yin Yoga , comfort is key. A thick, soft, and cushiony yoga mat is recommended to support joints and allow you to sit comfortably for long periods of time. Mats that are 5-7mm thick provide extra cushioning, ideal for relaxation and floor poses.

Dynamic yoga and grip

If you practice a more dynamic yoga, such as Vinyasa , Ashtanga or Hot Yoga , grip, size and comfort are essential criteria. A non-slip yoga mat with excellent grip will prevent slips and accidents. A moderate thickness, between 3 and 5 mm , will ensure a balance between comfort and stability, allowing you to move from one posture to another without restriction. The dimensions of the mat must allow freedom of movement, especially for quick or prolonged postures.

Sweating and safety

Sweating is an important aspect to consider, especially if you practice intense forms of yoga. PVC mats can become slippery if you sweat a lot, increasing the risk of falls. Joint thickness and protection

For people with sensitive joints or those who are new to yoga, a thick Yoga mat , between 5 and 7 mm , is often recommended. This thickness offers increased support, ideal for prolonged positions on the floor. However, a mat that is too thick can affect stability during balancing postures. Experienced yogis who want to work on their anchoring may prefer a thin Yoga mat , 3 mm , which offers a better connection with the floor.

The type of yoga you practice and where you practice it also influence the choice of thickness, material and type of your mat.

  • At home : You can opt for a thicker and heavier rug, prioritizing comfort. A 5 to 7 mm rug made of natural materials such as organic cotton or natural rubber can be ideal.

  • In the studio : Choose a lightweight mat or a thin overlay that you can place on top of the studio mats for hygiene and transport reasons. A 3 mm mat will be easier to transport.
