Local organic cotton
Grown in Tamil Nadu, our GOTS-certified organic cotton is selected for its softness and durability. Thanks to the expertise of our artisans and traditional weaving techniques, it becomes naturally non-slip, while respecting the environment and supporting local communities.

Natural latex
Taken from Hevea trees and meticulously applied with a brush to the entire underside of the carpet.
Some models with a more pronounced grip (Yama and Surya Pro) also receive a thin layer on top. Over time, you can use our latex refills to reinforce or maintain the grip of your mat, for lasting comfort and reliability.

MANUFACTURING

Each Mahola rug is the result of handcrafted work in Tamil Nadu, in southern India. We don't operate any factories; we work directly with weavers who perpetuate their traditional skills in the heart of their villages. The entire process relies on manual labor.

CARE AND WASHING

Our rug is designed to last for years, provided it receives the attention it deserves:

Washing

Machine washable (delicate cycle at 30°C recommended).
Use of a mild, natural laundry detergent
Wash separately, ideally in a protective bag to preserve the weave.

Drying

Lay flat, away from direct sunlight.
Avoid: sunlight, tumble dryers, radiators — which can damage plant-based dyes

Daily maintenance

The natural, plant-based dyes used to color the cotton in our rugs possess antibacterial properties recognized in Ayurveda. They naturally limit the growth of bacteria. For daily cleaning, simply shaking the rug or using a natural disinfectant spray is sufficient. In case of stains, a light cleaning with a damp cloth is recommended. Avoid harsh products (fabric softeners, stain removers, abrasive soaps, etc.).

Revive adhesion

Over time and with washing, the grip may diminish. Applying a thin layer of natural latex with a brush is enough to restore the original grip. In warm weather, lightly dampening your hands will improve the grip on the cotton.

01 Which mat should you choose for an intensive dynamic practice?

For intensive practice or if you are a yoga teacher, we recommend our SURYA PRO 7mm Premium yoga mat. Its thickness provides maximum cushioning, its two-layer structure ensures great responsiveness, while the treated cotton surface offers excellent stability and the grip needed for demanding poses. It is our most popular professional yoga mat. If you are less sensitive to the mat’s responsiveness, prioritize comfort in your choice criteria, and don’t want to compromise on grip, the other option for dynamic practices is the YAMA. It’s not just very beautiful; it’s an excellent mat for all practices requiring flawless grip.

02 Over time and with repeated washing, will the grip wear off?

Yes, but it’s not a problem because there is a solution. The grip on the floor will fade as the latex layer wears down over time and with washing; this is normal for a natural material. To restore or maintain the grip of your mats, we offer an anti-slip solution made from natural latex. Simply apply it with a brush, let it dry for 20 minutes: the smell disappears and the product becomes transparent.

03 Is the mat suitable for people with allergies (latex, etc.)?

Yes. Our mats are 100% natural, and in theory, there should be no surprises. The only question might concern the use of latex. We do use a very thin layer of latex, brushed under the mat, to improve grip on the floor and ensure it is completely non-slip. Since this layer is on the opposite side from where your body contacts the mat, there is no risk for the skin.
Only the SURYA PRO and YAMA models have a bit of latex on the surface: they should be avoided if you have a confirmed allergy, although the risk of reaction remains very low.

04 Is a cotton mat suitable when you sweat a lot?

Yes! Cotton becomes even more grippy with sweat. And even when it’s dry, spraying a light mist of water on your hands improves the grip.

05 Is the MAHOLA mat heavy to carry?

No. Naturally, the 3 mm models are the lightest, ideal for traveling, but overall our mats are not heavier than plastic options! A 7 mm cotton mat weighs less than a "good quality" 4.7 mm PVC alternative... The heaviest model in the range is the Surya Pro, which is still 300g lighter than its most serious PVC competitor.
