Yoga Routine: Shoulder Opening
The shoulders are an important part of the body that can be affected by stress, tension, and poor posture. Practicing yoga can help open and loosen the shoulders, improving flexibility and easing pain in particular. In this article, we'll explore a few yoga poses for a shoulder-opening routine.
Yoga Poses for Shoulder Opening
1. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
To strengthen without strain: a gentle extension that activates the back muscles.
Technique: lying on your stomach, chin on the floor, hands under the shoulders, inhale and gently lift the upper chest using the strength of your back. The arms support but don't push, like the cobra which has no arms or hands.
Benefits:
- Strengthens the lower back
- Opens the shoulders
- Improves breathing
- Reduces stress
2. Ustrasana (Camel Pose)
A beautiful backbend that deeply opens the spine.
Technique: Place your hands on your lower back or hips, fingers pointing down. Lengthen your torso from the base of the spine, tilting the pelvis slightly forward to stretch the lower back and open the chest. Keep the head in the natural line of the neck. Tuck the tailbone, gently draw the shoulder blades together while releasing the shoulders back. If the pose is comfortable, you can extend your arms behind you, aiming to touch your heels with your fingertips. Stay here for a few breaths, focusing on chest breathing.
Benefits:
- Deeply stretches the spine
-
Tones the thighs, the back, and opens the chest
-
Improves breathing by expanding the rib cage and deepening the breathing technique
- Opens the shoulders
3. Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
For deep toning: a full pose that engages the entire posterior chain.
Technique: lying on your stomach, bend your knees and hold your ankles with your hands. Inhale and lift the chest and thighs simultaneously, gently pulling the feet backward to form a bow shape with the body. The gaze faces forward or slightly upward, keeping the breath calm.
Benefits:
- Deeply strengthens the back and legs and opens the shoulders
- Opens the rib cage
- Stimulates the abdominal organs and improves digestion
- Boosts energy and reduces fatigue
4. Ardha Chakrasana (Wheel Pose)
For loosening and opening: a moderate backbend that gently energizes the back.
Technique: standing, feet hip-width apart, hands placed on the lower back (palms facing inward, fingers pointing down). Inhale, push the pelvis forward, and open the chest by leaning gently backward. Keep the legs strong and the gaze upward or level, depending on your comfort.
Benefits:
- Opens the shoulders and chest
- Improves spinal flexibility
- Strengthens the back muscles and tones the legs
- Boosts energy and helps correct posture
5. Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose)
To balance and release: a seated pose that deeply stretches the upper back and hips.
Technique: seated, cross one leg over the other so the knees stack. The foot of the lower leg comes near the opposite hip. Raise one arm toward the sky and bend it behind the back, while the other arm reaches up from below to try to clasp the other hand between the shoulder blades. Keep the back straight and breathe calmly.
